Religious leaders support President Ali’s vaping restrictions

Religious leaders have welcomed President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s decision to restrict the importation of vaping products into Guyana, describing the move as a necessary step to protect young people and safeguard the country’s future.

The head of state announced the measure on Saturday, citing growing concerns about vaping among children and young people.

His decision has received support from Hindu Devotee Ramchand Ragbeer and Pandit Hari Shankar, Founder and Chairman of the Sanskaar Bhaarati International Ashram Guyana, who believe that parents, schools, and religious organisations also have an important role to play in discouraging harmful habits.

Ragbeer, who served as president of the Ogle Mandir for 34 years, said he fully supported the president’s decision, noting that religious organisations have long encouraged young people to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption.

“I am totally in favour of the president, what he is doing in banning of vape,” Ragbeer stated, while calling for stronger measures to prevent minors from accessing cigarettes and alcohol.

He also urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s behaviour, while encouraging schools and religious institutions to use their platforms to educate young people about the dangers of vaping and substance use.

Meanwhile, Pandit Hari Shankar described the president’s announcement as an important intervention for the future of Guyana, warning that harmful habits can affect not only an individual’s health but also their ability to contribute positively to their family and society.

“When I read this message on Facebook, when I listen, I was so, so happy and proud,” Pandit Shankar said, expressing his support.

He explained that smoking, drug use and other harmful practices can undermine a person’s well-being and negatively affect families and communities.

He added that protecting young people from such influences was essential to ensuring they could fulfil their potential and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Pandit Shankar also pledged the support of the Sanskaar Bhaarati International Ashram Guyana, saying the organisation was willing to assist through volunteer efforts and other forms of support, where needed.

The two religious leaders were speaking on Monday evening as they joined devotees at the Sanskaar Bhaarati International Ashram Guyana in Diamond, East Bank Demerara, for the final night of Navratri.
