Press Release: Message by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali President of the Cooperative of Guyana and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the Guyana Defence Force
On the occasion of the 61st Anniversary of the Guyana Defence Force, I extend on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, and on my own behalf, congratulations and sincere appreciation to the officers, ranks, reservists, civilian staff, and veterans of the Force.
Sixty-one years ago, even before our Independence, Guyana established the GDF with a clear and enduring mission: to defend our territorial integrity and to serve our people. For six decades and one year, you have fulfilled that mission with professionalism, loyalty and courage.
This anniversary is a celebration of service in its truest sense.
It is a celebration of the service of our veterans, who built this Force from its foundation, who patrolled our vast frontiers with limited means, and who defended our sovereignty with steadfast resolve. Your service set the standard.
It is also a celebration of the service of those who wear the uniform today – on our borders, in our waters, in our airspace, and in our communities in times of need. You serve not for recognition, but from a deep commitment to country. That selfless service is the strength of our nation.
Service is what defines the Guyanese soldier. It is service before self, service to community, and service to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
Over the past five years, my Government has worked deliberately to ensure that your service is matched with the capabilities and conditions you deserve. We have pursued continuous recapitalisation across the Force, expanded and modernized training, and invested in new infrastructure and improved living conditions – from new vessels and aircraft to modern barracks and reinforced forward operating bases across our country. This transformation has made our Force more aware, more adaptable, and more agile, ready to meet the complex demands of a new Guyana.
Guyana is and will remain a peace-loving nation, committed to international law and peaceful coexistence. Yet we are resolute: the Guyana we inherited is the Guyana we will preserve. In that noble task, I have complete trust and confidence in the Guyana Defence Force.
To the families who stand behind our soldiers, thank you for your sacrifice and support. To those who gave their lives in service, we honour your memory and your service will never be forgotten.
I charge the Force to continue to serve with honour, to remain professional, apolitical and firmly loyal to the Constitution of Guyana.
Happy 61st Anniversary to the Guyana Defence Force.
May God bless the Force and may God bless the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
